Saddleridge Fire! July 11, 2008

"Any spark can cause a wildfire!
  • Welding without a spotter
  • Hay Balers
  • Electric Fences"

On Friday, July 11th, 2008, a fire was started on one of the lots in Saddleridge as the result of a spark from welding a fence without a spotter. By the time the welder noticed the fire, it was already out of control. He quickly called 911, and multiple fire trucks from Wimberley Fire Department soon arrived and were able to contain the fire. Jan Fulkerson of the Texas Forest Service (and Firewise Coordinator) was on the scene also. Jan provided the above quotes from a Texas Forest Service card, as well as a News Release from the Texas Forest Service titled "Recent Rainfall not enough to end wildfire risk". (That news release is available by clicking on the link in the previous sentence.)

Firewise Communities USA

In 2004, Saddleridge became a member of the Firewise Communities USA. The Firewise Communities approach emphasizes community responsibility for planning in the design of a safe community as well as effective emergency response, and individual responsibility for safer home construction and design, landscaping, and maintenance.

Over the past few years we have worked with Jan Fulkerson of the Texas Forest Service to encourage effective fire safety practices within Saddleridge. Jan has attended and spoken at Saddleridge Board meetings and Neighborhood Night Out meetings, as well as worked with individual property owners to review and recommend specific changes to improve fire safety.

The Firewise website (www.firewise.org) has considerable information regarding fire safety and personal improvements that can be made. There are regular newsletters published on the website, and there's a page on the efforts undertaken by Saddleridge residents (www.firewise.org/usa/saddle_ridge.htm). Take a look at the information available on their website when you get a chance.

Planning to burn cuttings or debris any time soon? Need to know what the burn requirements are, or who to call when you're planning to burn? Take a look at the Wimberley Volunteer Fire Department Website for more information about burn requirements.
